Smelling Your Emotions

Our bodies are amazing and wonderful organisms that use our five senses to communicate different sensations that can evoke many different emotions. Of all of our senses, smell can be the strongest in evoking emotions and memories. Your sense of smell also directly deposits a scent, by way of the cribriform plate, into the brain by way of the limbic system. Our limbic systems is part of the brain which functions to process emotions and memory.

That being said, what better way to evoke confidence, closeness and love than aromatherapy? Blended oil body products and linen sprays are simple and effective ways to infuse loving scents into everyday life. Below are some oils used in various ways that evoke these emotions.

Massage Oil or Body Lotion Blend

  • 4oz of oil or unscented good quality lotion (I prefer sweet almond oil. It hydrates and soaks in quickly leaving a non-greasy feeling)
  • 32 drops of orange essential oil (fruit not leaf or peel. i.e. – neroli)
  • 6 drops of ylang ylang essential oil
  • 8-10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil

Place oil in a dark glass container (can be found at natural food stores or even drugstores). Add essential oils drop by drop into the oil in the container. Roll container gently between hands for about 30 seconds to blend the oils together. Try out your blend and make adjustments as necessary so it meets your preference. The formula above is a guideline not a requirement. Use your nose as your guide! ps – sandalwood also smells great!

Linen Spray

  • 4 oz of distilled water
  • 15 drops of sandalwood essential oil
  • 5 drops of vetiver essential oil
  • 4 drops of jasmine absolute oil

Pour distilled water in a dark glass spray bottle. Add each essential oil one at a time to the water. Roll bottle in between your hands for about 30 seconds. Check your blend and adjust to your preference as necessary. Lavender is also a nice touch. Once finished, spray on sheets, pillows, couch, curtains, etc. and then fluff.
